How Long Does It Take to Cure Neuropathy? | Nexus Neuro

June 8, 2026

If you’ve been dealing with nerve pain, balance issues, numbness, or other neurological symptoms for a while, one of the first things you want to know is: how long is this going to take?

It’s a fair question. And at Nexus Neuro in Carmel, Indiana, we try to give a real answer, not a vague “it depends” and not an empty promise.

The truth is, treatment timelines do vary. But probably not for the reasons you’d expect.

The Answer Might Surprise You

Most people assume that the longer they’ve had their symptoms, or the more severe things feel, the longer recovery is going to take. That’s a reasonable assumption, but it’s not always accurate.

Dr. Matt Schulke, DC, DACNB, BCN, sees this play out all the time in our clinic. Some patients come in with years of symptoms and see significant improvement in just a few months. Others who seem less severe on paper end up needing more time because of other factors going on underneath the surface.

The stage of your condition matters. So does what’s driving it.

What Actually Determines Your Timeline

When we assess a new patient, we’re looking at more than just your main symptoms. We’re building a picture of what’s actually happening neurologically, and that picture is different for everyone.

A few of the factors that influence how long recovery takes:

The stage of nerve degeneration. Nerve damage progresses in stages. Earlier-stage cases generally respond faster. But even advanced cases can still improve, it just may take longer and require a more comprehensive approach.

Underlying conditions. Things like autoimmune disorders, mold or toxin exposure, metabolic issues, and other comorbidities can slow the healing process. They don’t make recovery impossible, but they do need to be addressed alongside the neurological work.

How your nervous system responds to treatment. Every nervous system is different. Some people respond quickly. Others need more time and repetition to build new neural pathways. This isn’t a failure, it’s just biology.

Your overall health picture. Nutrition, sleep, stress, and other lifestyle factors all play a role in how well your nervous system can heal and adapt.

A Real Example

Dr. Schulke recently treated a 93-year-old patient who came in with 75% nerve loss, which is significant damage by any measure, and she’d had it for a long time. Three months later, she was at 0% loss.

Meanwhile, a 30-year-old patient dealing with autoimmunity and mold exposure might take twice as long to reach the same milestone. Age didn’t determine the outcome. History didn’t either. What mattered was getting the full picture and building a plan around it.

So What’s a Realistic Timeframe?

Here’s what we generally see:

Some patients experience meaningful improvement within 3 months. For others, a full program runs closer to a year. And for more complex cases, especially where multiple underlying factors are involved, it can take longer than that.

We know that’s not the clean answer most people are hoping for. But we’d rather give you an honest range than set an expectation we can’t back up.

What we can tell you is this: once we do a thorough assessment and understand what’s actually driving your symptoms, we’re able to give you a much more specific picture of what your path forward looks like.

Does Your Treatment Stay the Same the Whole Time?

Not necessarily. Your program is designed to evolve with you.

As your nervous system responds and your function improves, what your brain and body need from treatment changes too. We track your progress and adjust accordingly, adding complexity, shifting focus, or introducing new modalities as you advance through your program.

This is one of the things that sets functional neurology apart from a lot of conventional care. We’re not running the same protocol on everyone. We’re working with a system that’s constantly changing, and your treatment needs to keep up with that.

What to Do If You’ve Been Waiting to Get Help

A lot of the patients we see have been managing their symptoms for years before they find us. They’ve tried other treatments, gotten partial answers, or were told there wasn’t much that could be done.

If that sounds familiar, don’t let the uncertainty about timelines be the thing that keeps you from finding out what’s actually possible for you.

The best way to get a real answer is to come in. We’ll look at the full picture, tell you what we’re working with, and give you an honest assessment of what recovery could look like — for you specifically.

At Nexus Neuro, we serve patients from Carmel, Westfield, Zionsville, Fishers, Noblesville, and the greater Indianapolis area.
