“It’s All In Your Head”: 5 Questions To Ask If Your Symptoms Haven’t Been Explained

October 13, 2026

Few things feel more frustrating than being told your symptoms are “all in your head,” especially when what you’re feeling is very real. If you’ve had normal test results but still don’t feel like yourself, you’re not imagining it. A “normal” test doesn’t always mean nothing is happening. It may just mean the underlying issue hasn’t been identified yet.

If you’ve reached this point, here are some questions worth bringing to your next appointment.

1. Has My Autonomic Nervous System Been Evaluated?

Standard bloodwork can look completely normal even when the autonomic nervous system isn’t functioning the way it should. Blood pressure and heart rate responses, for example, how your body reacts when you move from lying down to standing, can reveal patterns that routine labs simply aren’t designed to catch.

2. Has Anyone Looked at How My Brain and Body Are Communicating?

Symptoms like dizziness, brain fog, or unexplained fatigue aren’t always the result of one isolated problem. They can be related to how your sensory, balance, and cognitive systems are coordinating with one another. If no one has looked at that communication as a whole, some pieces of the puzzle may be missing.

3. Could This Be a Functional Issue Rather Than a Structural One?

A “normal” scan is excellent for ruling out many types of structural damage, like a fracture or a tumor. But it doesn’t measure how well different systems are functioning in real time. Functional issues, meaning problems with how systems are working together rather than visible damage, often don’t show up on standard imaging at all.

4. What Patterns or Triggers Make My Symptoms Worse?

Even when a single test looks normal, patterns can offer real clues. Keeping track of when your symptoms improve or flare, whether that’s tied to position changes, activity, meals, stress, or time of day, can help identify what’s actually driving what you’re experiencing.

5. Are There More Specific Diagnostic Options to Consider?

Beyond a standard workup, tools such as video oculography, detailed balance testing, or autonomic nervous system assessments may offer additional information when appropriate. These aren’t always part of a routine visit, but they can uncover things a standard workup wasn’t designed to look for.

You Deserve To Be Taken Seriously

Being dismissed doesn’t make your symptoms less real, and it doesn’t mean there’s nothing left to explore. At Nexus Neuro, we focus on understanding how your nervous system is functioning and use that information to help guide a personalized support plan, working in collaboration with your existing healthcare providers rather than in place of them.

If you’ve been told everything looks normal but you still don’t feel right, it may be time to ask a different set of questions.
