Motion Sickness as an Adult: When It’s Actually a Vestibular Issue

You never used to get carsick. You could read in the backseat, ride roller coasters without a second thought, and never worried about which seat you picked on a boat or a plane. Now, somewhere in your 30s, 40s, or beyond, a car ride makes you queasy. Scrolling on your phone while riding in the passenger seat feels unbearable. Even certain grocery store aisles or busy visual environments leave you feeling off-balance and nauseated.

If motion sickness has shown up later in life, seemingly out of nowhere, it is worth paying attention to. New-onset motion sickness in adulthood is often not just an inconvenience. It can be a sign that the vestibular system, the part of the inner ear and brain responsible for balance and spatial orientation, is not functioning the way it should.

Why Motion Sickness Happens in the First Place

Motion sickness occurs when there is a mismatch between the signals your brain receives from your eyes, your inner ear, and your body’s sense of position. Normally, these three systems work together seamlessly. When they send conflicting information, such as your inner ear sensing movement while your eyes are focused on a stationary phone screen, the brain interprets the confusion as a threat and triggers nausea, dizziness, and sometimes sweating or vomiting.

Some people are simply more prone to this mismatch than others. But when motion sickness develops suddenly in adulthood after years of tolerating travel just fine, it usually points to a change in how well the vestibular system itself is functioning, not just an increase in general sensitivity.

What Could Be Driving New Motion Sensitivity

Vestibular migraine. This is one of the most commonly overlooked causes of adult-onset motion sensitivity. Vestibular migraine can cause dizziness, imbalance, and motion intolerance with or without a traditional headache, which is why it often goes unrecognized for years.

A past head injury or whiplash. Even a concussion or neck injury from years ago can leave subtle, lasting effects on the vestibular and visual systems that only become noticeable under certain conditions, like riding in a car or navigating a crowded space.

Inner ear changes. Conditions affecting the inner ear can alter how motion signals are processed, even when hearing is unaffected and there is no obvious ear infection or acute vertigo episode.

Autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Since the vestibular system is closely tied to the autonomic nervous system, dysregulation here (the same kind we test for with Nerve Express ANS testing) can lower your threshold for motion-triggered nausea and dizziness.

Visual-vestibular mismatch from increased screen time. Adults spending more time on phones and screens, especially while in motion, can develop a heightened sensitivity over time as the visual and vestibular systems get less practice working together smoothly.

Why “Just Take Dramamine” Misses the Point

Over-the-counter motion sickness medication can suppress symptoms for a single trip, but it does not address why the mismatch is happening in the first place. If your vestibular system has developed a functional weakness or your nervous system has become dysregulated, medicating the symptom leaves the underlying issue untouched and often worsening over time.
